Il a obtenu son doctorat à l'Université Bocconi (Italie), un Master en Gestion des Politiques Économiques à l'Université Columbia (États-Unis) et une Licence en Économie à l'ITAM (Mexique). Ses recherches portent sur les individus et les organisations en période de changement et de transition, en examinant le rôle des organisations et des institutions dans le traitement des enjeux sociaux et politiques ainsi que dans la définition des résultats économiques et politiques. Son travail explore l’interaction entre les dynamiques démographiques, les institutions et la culture dans la formation des inégalités, des écarts entre les genres et des phénomènes de polarisation, ayant des implications significatives pour la prise de décision des entreprises et des politiques publiques. Utilisant des méthodes de recherche quantitative et des techniques économétriques avancées, Alfonso a publié dans des revues prestigieuses telles que Nature Human Behavior, Journal of International Business Studies et Global Strategy Journal. Il a également présenté ses travaux dans des conférences internationales renommées, notamment l'Academy of Management, l’EGOS Colloquium, la Strategic Management Society, l’Academy of International Business, la Population Association of America, l’Economic History Association et le World Economic History Congress.
